Deadly Allusions

A murder-filled crossword without the squares

Dead men tell no tales—or do they?  Play Deadly Allusions: 60 Puzzles for the Cultured Detective, and answer that question today. When you steep yourself in these trivia-themed minute mysteries, you become the sleuth, and you don't even need to share room and board with Doctor Watson.

The object of the game is to pick up on the particular reference in the story and apply it to one of the suspects. Topics include history, literature, art, music, sports, movies, food, drink and word origins. Each whodunit features a hint (for those times when your sidekick has let you down) and an explanation of the solution.

They’re fun.  They’re educational.  They have dead bodies in them.  Enjoy!

Update:

We’d like to let everyone know that the iPhone puzzle apps, Deadly Allusions, Deadlier Allusions and Deadliest Allusions, have moved over to the iBookstore.  We debated quite a lot here at MysteryCaper about how to improve the apps, but in the end we decided that there was no sense in trying to enhance our text engine.  The iBooks app has pretty much perfected it.

Now, for essentially the same price as the three apps combined you get 61 puzzles for $2.99.  That’s over 2/3 more murder and mayhem, and who wouldn’t want that?  (You can also download a free sample.)  As an iBook, Allusions will now support both the iPhone and iPad natively, and you can do all the things iBooks does with ease—change the text size, etc.  But one of the nicest upgrades is the built-in dictionary—allowing the player to look up a clue right on the spot.  Wikipedia is also only a tap away, and with these tools on hand what chance does the average made-up murderer have?  Not much!

Of course, you have to have at least iOS 4 to run iBooks, and because of that the original apps aren’t going anywhere.  You can continue to download all three Allusions apps from the App Store.  The choice is yours.  And as always, enjoy!

Deadly Allusions is also available in a print edition, under the title Dead Men Do Tell Tales.

“As a fan of riddles and puzzles that make the old grey matter start working, I loved this.”

-The Portable Gamer

“The game does challenge one's sense of historical and pop culture knowledge, and the most enjoyable aspect is the witty dialogue between the two characters that find the body.”
